Camp Order No. 5

Memorial Day 2012

Brothers please remember that during our initiation we all took this pledge:

“ . . . to always observe the day set aside  by the Grand Army of the Republic as Memorial Day,
sacred to the memory of the Union Soldiers and Sailors of 1861 to 1865 and do all in my power to persuade others  to do the same.”

Try to honor your pledge by participating in a memorial in your area.

Our Camp participated in the kickoff of the City of Cohoes Memorial Day Parade on Thursday May 24, 2012.
I was honored to be the featured speaker and I followed the presentation of the Gettysburg Address by a student from Cohoes High School.
I am including my presentation here, which makes allusions to Mr. Lincoln’s Address,
as a reflection for the upcoming days that we commemorate those who served and sacrificed.

We have heard a representative of our youth present one of the most stirring speeches given in any political arena in United States History.    It is critical to our fabric as a nation that the understanding of the desires espoused by President Lincoln be passed from one generation to the next.  It is good, and necessary, to have each generation remember.  But what does this ‘remembrance’ really mean?

Remembrance involves an act of honor.  Memorial Day was originally called “Decoration Day” and it involved Civil War veterans, freedmen and women decorating the graves of the fallen, both North and South.
The veterans, members of the Grand Army of the Republic (or GAR),  adopted this as their national day of remembrance.
It is fitting that these proceedings are initiated at a Soldier and Sailor monument erected by the GAR.

Remembrance also involves a continuation of the work that President Lincoln assigned to his contemporaries,
to us and each succeeding generation: Mister Lincoln makes a point of explaining to the living
that we must be “dedicated to the great task that lies ahead.”

I repeat the question from my opening comments:  What does this remembrance mean?  It is the task to which Lincoln referred.
This means that we must not only honor the “final resting place” of those who served and are buried but we must also use locations and monuments like this as a “remembering place.”  They should not just be remembered when we stand before a physical monument;
those who have sacrificed and those who have gone before us must be etched in our minds and hearts to be remembered
and honored by the “unfinished work” that we all have to do.

James Irwin, Commander of the local US Submarine Veterans Base said it best a few days ago at the dedication of a monument for those underwater warriors.  I’ll paraphrase him:  “a veteran dies twice: once when the veteran is physically killed or dies
and once again when he is forgotten.”  Let us be sure that our unfinished work, our great task,  is “to remember”
and visit these “remembering places” and not allow all of those who sacrificed to die once again. Please Remember…

So ordered 26 May 2012.
